Blustery winds continue to sweep across Hawaii
HONOLULU — Blustery winds continue to sweep across Hawaii, causing damages to utility poles and forcing at least two road closures in Honolulu.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory until Monday evening, warning that winds could gust over 50 mph.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports gusting winds knocked out electricity to nearly 5,000 Hawaii Electric Co. customers on Oahu on Sunday. Fire officials said winds toppled several trees, causing significant damages to three cars, and damaged at least two roofs.
On Maui, fire crews had to rescue four paddle boarders and a kayaker who were pulled offshore by powerful winds on Sunday. They also airlifted 13 hikers, ranging from 8 to 54 years old, after they became trapped on a Bamboo Forest trail by swollen stream waters.
Donor gives to Hawaii oceanography, cancer studies
HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii has received a $3 million gift in support of cancer and oceanographic research.
The university said Friday its cancer center and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology are each receiving $1.5 million from the Denise B. Evans estate.
Oceanography graduate student Yoshimi Rii is among those receiving fellowship money because of the gift.
She says the funds will give her financial security for the rest of her time in graduate school. She says the money will give her the freedom to pursue research ideas that wouldn’t have been able to study otherwise.
Cancer Center Director Dr. Michele Carbone says gifts like this one allow the school to quickly build a world-class cancer research program that will benefit Hawaii and the greater community.
