The Hawaii Police Department is continuing its investigation of an inert training device found in a Waimea grocery store. Police initiated a terroristic threatening case.
South Kohala patrol officers responded around 8:18 a.m. Saturday to the Foodland Waimea Store to a report of a grenade found to be within the produce section of the store. The store was subsequently closed and evacuated for safety reasons, police said.
With the assistance of federal Transportation Security Administration officials, it was determined the grenade was an inert training device that was shipped with the produce from Seattle, Wash., and did not pose an immediate threat to the safety of the public. TSA officials assisted with the removal and disposal of the device. TSA will be conducting an independent investigation surrounding the circumstances of the shipping of the training device. The store was reopened at 11:40 a.m, police said.
