BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia ousted Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the first round of the Copa Claro tournament on Monday.
The fifth-seeded Zeballos defeated seven-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the final of the VTR Open in Chile just over a week ago.
No. 2 seed Nicolas Almagro defeated Argentine Guido Pella 6-3, 6-2, continuing his recent success on clay in Latin America.
Top-seeded Cilic
moves to 2nd round
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Top-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia was taken to three sets Monday before defeating Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round of the U.S. National Indoor Championships.
Cilic was the only seeded player on the men’s side of the tournament to play on Monday. Third-seeded John Isner and Sam Querrey, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, are expected to open play tosday.
On the women’s side of the tournament, top-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and second-seeded Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden were straight-set winners earlier Monday.
Flipkens defeated Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 6-2, while Arvidsson was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over qualifier Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.
Janowicz and Tomic
reach 2nd round of Open 13
MARSEILLE, France — Seventh-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland and Bernard Tomic of Australia reached the second round of the Open 13 on Monday.
Janowicz clinched the first set in just 25 minutes and broke again at the start of the second to take control and beat Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4.
Tomic had a tougher time before overcoming eighth-seeded Martin Klizan of Slovakia 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7). Tomic hit 11 aces to Klizan’s 10 and both players dropped serve twice.
Sloane Stephens
loses in 1st round in Dubai
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sloane Stephens lost in the first round of the Dubai Championship on Monday, the latest setback for the rising American star who reached the Australian Open semifinals.
Stephens, a career-high 16th in the world rankings since knocking out Serena Williams in Melbourne, lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Eleventh-ranked Marion Bartoli also advanced, coming from a set down to beat Klara Zakopalova 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Nike, Oakley move
away from Oscar Pistorius
Two major sponsors, Oakley and Nike, distanced themselves from Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius on Monday after the South African sports star was charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
Oakley, the eyewear maker, suspended its contract with Pistorius. And Nike, which sells shoes and other athletic gear, said it has no plans to use him in future ad campaigns.
Pistorius lost both of his legs in childhood. Racing on carbon-fiber blades, he was the first amputee athlete to run at the world championships in 2011, and he made history competing in the London Olympics last year.
NFL player accused
of having gun at NY airport
NEW YORK — Authorities say an NFL player has been arrested at a New York airport after police found a handgun in his luggage.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Da’Quan Bowers was arraigned Monday on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and posted $10,000 bond.
Bowers was arrested at LaGuardia Airport as he was about to board a US Airways flight to Raleigh, N.C. Authorities say the .40-caliber weapon was found during a search of his carry-on bag.
