Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players will present Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 to 23 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center.

HPA theater instructor Marina Tichotsky directs, with set and lighting design by Jared Terpak. Original music, written by Tichotsky, will be performed by students Mieyo Abe, Ella Kotner and Tichotsky.

“Steel Magnolias” is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, La., where all the ladies who are “anybody” have their hair done. Helped by her eager assistant, Annelle, Truvy dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a “good ole boy.”

Filled with hilarious repartee and humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when the spunky Shelby risks pregnancy and dies. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength — and love — that make the play, and its characters, touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

The cast features Jackson Streiter as Truvy, Jessica Ainslie as Annelle, Rei Fujita as Clairee, Eliana Kaplan as Shelby, Angie Shumov as M’Lynn, and Lauren Richards as Ouiser. Churchill Crean is the voice of DJ.
