HPR reaches goal
for new transmitter

Hawaii Public Radio reached its $100,000 funding goal for the new KHPH 88.7 transmitter project in West Hawaii on Feb. 1.

KTA Stores pledged a $5,000 matching gift in memory of Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi, founders of KTA Super Stores and K. Taniguchi Ltd., and donations allowed HPR to access a McInerny Foundation’s $20,000 matching gift. HPR was then able to purchase the equipment needed to go on air earlier than an FCC licensing requirement that KHPH must be on the air by April 14.

The station will go on air on Valentine’s Day. The official sign-on will happen during “The Conversation” between 8 and 9 a.m.

The station will reflect the HPR-2 program stream, carrying news, local and national talk shows and music from jazz and blues to Brazilian and bluuegrass.

Village stroll
slated for Feb. 17

Alii Drive becomes a pedestrian-only walkway during the Kokua Kailua Village Stroll slated from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 17. The public is invited to explore the shops, wares of island vendors and dine in any number of restaurants found throughout The village.

Entertainment begins at 4 p.m. on the lawn at Hulihee Palace.

The event is sponsored by the Kailua Village Business Improvement District, Desti-nation Kona Coast, Kailua Village Merchants Association, Hulihee Palace, West Hawaii Today and Pacific Radio Group. The program is designed to rally support for merchants and restaurants and to remind residents to shop, dine and buy local.
