Team Mango Races held its 21st annual Springtime Triathlon last Sunday at Kailua Pier. This race consisted of a half-mile swim, a hilly 15-mile bicycle ride and a hilly six-mile run. Both the bike and the run were a test of strength, with a total of four hill climbs between the two, but they proved to be a fun challenge.

The athletes had a beach start for the two-lap swim course in beautiful Kailua Bay. Upon completion of the second lap, the athletes mounted their bikes before riding along Alii Drive to Hualalai Road up to Queen Kaahumanu Highway and making a right turn onto Kuakini Highway for a total of three loops. Following the bike, the athletes laced up their shoes for a run along the same course as the bike.

Thomas Vonach, who completed the course in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 56 seconds, sprinted into first place. Vonach turned in the fastest run split of the day at 35:48.

Tai Scarbrough claimed second place with a time of 1:27:12, and Lance Davisson (1:32:21) was third.

Kym Kiser, who finished eighth overall and first for the women, completed the race in a speedy time of 1:44:59. Sam Playfair (1:52:24) earned second place, and Nancy Fedeyko claimed third (1:54:36).

For the relay teams, the tandem of Isabella Gambrona and Vonach finished in first with a time of 1:25:41. Kiser and Rob Van Geen took second at 1:43:33, while Kiser and Caleb Westfall Jr. claimed third (1:53:56).

For those who only raced in the half-mile swim, Isabella Gambrona finished first with a time of 7:17 for the two laps. Second place went to Ricci Racela (7:28), and Susan Nixon was third (7:43).

Congratulations to all who competed in the Springtime Triathlon.
