Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation in connection with a 31-year-old man whose body was found Wednesday morning after he was swept out to sea Tuesday in Puna.
Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation in connection with a 31-year-old man whose body was found Wednesday morning after he was swept out to sea Tuesday in Puna.
The victim has been identified as Charles Lyon of Keaau, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Puna patrol officers and the Hawaii Fire Department responded to a possible drowning off of Makuu Drive in Hawaiian Paradise Park, according to police. Upon arrival, officers learned that Lyon had been washed out to sea while fishing with his brother.
Fire department and U.S. Coast Guard personnel searched for the missing man but were unable to locate him initially and the search was suspended because of nightfall and weather conditions, according to police. The search resumed at first light Wednesday and Lyon’s body was quickly retrieved.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, according to police.
