Outstanding elders sought by county
Nominations for Hawaii County’s Outstanding Older Americans Awards are being accepted until March 5.
The awards luncheon will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 2 at the Hapuna Ballroom at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Tickets cost $25 each. Private, air-conditioned busing will be provided for the first 300 registrants.

Sunset cruise
offers Kona’s history
The Kona Historical Society presents a historical sunset cruise aboard the catamaran Fair Wind II from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The tour begins and ends at Keauhou Bay and includes Kahaluu, Kealakekua and Honaunau bays.
Kamaaina John Mitchell provides the historical narrative, prepared by Kona historian Jean Greenwell, on the holua at Keauhou, the Battle of Kuamoo, Kealakekua Bay, the Battle of Mokuohai at Keei and Puuhonua o Honaunau.
Reservations are $65 for society members and $75 for nonmembers. Members will be asked to show their membership cards to receive the discount. There will be a no-host bar aboard. For reservations, call Fair Wind at 322-2788.

Handweavers group meets in Honokaa
The Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Handweavers Hui meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center in Honokaa.
Sharon Gerrish will be guest demonstrator of the A-frame loom, a weaving method where warp and weft are a continuous strand with no loom waste. Gerrish raises sheep at her Sunbonnet Farm at Pohakea on the Hamakua Coast; she also shears sheep, processes wool, spins, hooks rugs, crochets and weaves.
Monday Weavers, an informal weaving discussion group, meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Island Yarns and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St. in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area. Weavers share and discuss weaving projects and exchange tips and ideas each month.
Both events are open to the public at no charge.

Moir appointed museum president
The board of trustees of Lyman House Memorial Museum has appointed Barbara Moir as its president and executive director.
Moir holds a master’s degree and doctorate in anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, focusing on Pacific Island cultures and history, marine biology and ecology, and has conducted research throughout the Pacific, including Hawaii. Before moving to the Big Island in 2006, she worked as curator of collections at the CNMI Museum of History and Culture and as vice president of Northern Marianas College on Saipan. Since joining the Lyman Museum she has served as curator of education and operations and as deputy director.
Ocean Tourism Coalition elects officers, directors
The Ocean Tourism Coalition has elected its 2013 officers and directors. Serving as president and re-elected is Jim Coon of Trilogy. Greg Howeth of Lahania Divers Inc. will serve as vice president, Andrew Evans of Captain Andy’s on Kauai is treasurer and Mendy Dant of Fair Wind Inc., Kona, is secretary. Other directors include Kevin Millet of Holoholo Charters, Kauai, and Mark Almaraz of Atlantis Adventures, Oahu. Tim Lyons continues as executive director.
The coalition is a nonprofit organization composed of the majority of commercial boating operators from throughout the state.
Motorists should expect convoy Sunday
Hilo-based military units will convoy from Pohakuloa Training Area to Keaukaha Military Reservation between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday
The convoys will travel via Airport Road, Kanoelehua Avenue (Highway 11), West Puainako Street, Komohana Avenue, Puainako Extension (Route 2000) and Saddle Road (Highway 200).
The trucks will have Hawaii Police Department escorts but will have escort vehicles front and rear. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.
The PTA Department of Army police is working closely with local authorities and military units to coordinate this activity in support of unit training.
