Imiloa to host science fair, field trips
The 27th annual Hawaii District Science and Engineering Fair will be held Feb. 16 at Imiloa Astronomy Center. More than 100 projects completed by students in grades six to 12 will be judged that day.
The projects will be available for public viewing, at no charge, Feb. 17 and 19 through 22 in Imiloa’s Moanahoku Hall. Admission applies for the Imiloa exhibits and planetarium shows.
School excursions will be scheduled Feb. 19 to 22. The science fair field trips will give students a chance to view the projects, visit the exhibit hall and gardens, and watch the planetarium show, “We Are Astronomers.”

Lions Club to hold hearing screenings
Members of the Lions Club of Kona, with the support of the Kailua-Kona Lions and Kaloko Lions clubs, will hold hearing screenings for first- and second-graders the following dates at these West Hawaii elementary schools.

Credit union announces scholarships
HFS Federal Credit Union is accepting applications for its 2013 scholarship program. The credit union will award seven $2,500 scholarships to graduating Hawaii Island high school seniors to help them pursue their goals of higher education.
Students must meet the following qualifications to apply: current HFS Federal Credit Union member in good standing, current senior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, will attend an accredited two- or four-year vocational-technical school, college or university full time in 2013-14, and financial need.

HMSA launches video awards contest
The Hawaii Medical Service Association, in conjunction with the Hawaii Department of Education, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Hawaii Meth Project and the Domestic Violence Action Center, is accepting entries for the 2013 HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest.
The annual contest challenges local middle and high school students to create public service announcements focusing on important teen health issues: addiction prevention, healthy living, mental health or teen safety.
Students must submit fully produced 27-second public service announcements by March 4. Judges will select winners based on content, effectiveness, creativity and videography. Winning videos will be broadcast on local television stations.
The first place winners in each category will receive $1,000 for their school to purchase video equipment or software. Second place winners receive $500; third, $250. The Best of Show will receive an additional $1,000. The Hawaii Meth Project, MADD and the Domestic Violence Action Center will award special prizes for the top video on the risks of meth use, underage drinking, and dating or family violence, respectively. A $500 award will be presented for the best middle school submission.
The public can vote for their favorite video at hmsa.com from 8 a.m. April 1 through 4 p.m. April 12. The video with the most votes will win a Voters’ Choice award worth $500.
Information packets, including contest rules, entry forms, release forms, and copyright information, have been distributed to schools statewide. HMSA will accept both group and individual entries. Contest information and entry materials are also available at hmsa.com/tva.
Credit union offers scholarships
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is accepting scholarship applications from Hawaii Island high school seniors through April 8.
The credit union will award five $2,500 scholarships, each named after a volunteer who made important contributions to financial institution, to seniors headed to an institution of higher learning.
The Peter Hirata, Albert Akana, Katsumasa Tomita and Frank Ishii scholarships are awarded to students based on need, academic achievement, career goals and extracurricular activities. The John Y. Iwane scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who meets the same criteria and also plans to enter an agriculture-related field of study.
Any graduating senior attending a high school on the island and planning to attend a two- or four-year institute of higher learning is eligible to apply.
