At about 2:15 p.m., witnesses at Kanaloa Resort called Hawaii County Fire Department about a paddler whose canoe they saw broken in half by a whale, an HFD release states.

According to the release, HFD responded to the scene with fire trucks, a medic unit, a rescue boat, two helicopters and three other units. Witnesses saw the man, reported to be 60 years old, waving his paddle to a passing Captain Zodiac boat; the crew helped him aboard, then he transferred to a private vessel and retrieved his canoe, the release states.

The release says the man was not in need of medical assistance, as his only injury was a superficial scratch sustained from a jagged edge of the broken canoe.
