Richard Masayuki Tanaka, 87, of Honaunau died Jan. 18, 2013, at a private care home in Kailua-Kona. Born April 8, 1925, in Keei, he was a retired assistant bell captain at the former Kona Hilton Hotel, a third generation lifelong coffee farmer, an Army Korean War and National Guard veteran and member of the Keei Kumiai, Kumamoto Kenjin Kai, Big Island National Guard and American Legion Post 20.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Feb. 2 at Kona Hongwanji Mission in Kealakekua for a 4 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by sons, Pat (Mae) Tanaka of Renton, Wash., Robert Tanaka of Japan; daughter, Barbara (George Calderon) Peterson of Sandy, Utah; sisters, Kay Sugai of Honalo, Doris Yamashita and Misao (Atsushi) Matsumoto, both of Captain Cook; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
