Hawaii Electric Light Co. said approximately 13,494 customers in various parts of the Big Island lost power Friday when a tree fell on HELCO’s transmission lines on Hawaii Belt Road, near mile marker 27.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. said approximately 13,494 customers in various parts of the Big Island lost power Friday when a tree fell on HELCO’s transmission lines on Hawaii Belt Road, near mile marker 27.

Load shedding by HELCO was instituted to protect equipment, triggering the power interruptions. Power was restored to 12,200 customers within six minutes, according to HELCO. Power to the remaining customers was restored by 1:53 p.m., according to HELCO.
