Team Mango Races began its 2013 schedule with a new addition to its race lineup.

Last Sunday’s Winter Super Sprint Triathlon, like its name suggests, was an all-out sprint from start to finish.

The race started with a 200-yard swim in Kailua Bay. Once out of the water, the triathletes mounted their bikes before cycling up Hualalai Road, south along Queen Kaahumanu Highway, north on Kuakini Highway and back to the pier along Alii Drive. The athletes then laced up their shoes and ran down Alii Drive to the turnaround just past Huggo’s on the Rocks before racing back to the finish line at the pier.

Aaron Patel finished the super sprint with an outstanding winning time of 31 minutes, 25 seconds. He also finished with the fastest run split, running the 1.5-mile course in 9:50. Youngster Chris Prater claimed a second-place finish with a time of 32:36.

Team Bike Works, which finished third at 32:41, had the fastest swim time of the day (3:48). Kris Kiser rounded out the top four at 32:59.

One athlete did not see the turnaround sign and ended up completing a longer run course; Michael DeCarli finished in fifth overall with a total time of 33:21. DeCarli had the fastest bike time of the day, completing the hilly six-mile course in 16:33.

Kym Kiser claimed first place for the women and seventh overall with a total time of 34:42. She also had the women’s fastest bike time of 17:45.

Morgan Johnson took second for the women at 36:57. Dene Sturm was third (41:35), and Lori Montgomery earned fourth (43:29).

Congratulations to all who completed the Winter Super Sprint Triathlon. You all did an amazing job. Team Mango would like to extend special congratulations to Melissa Braswell and Melissa Hattock for completing their first triathlons this past weekend. Way to go.

On Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions will host Peaman’s Splish-Splash and Super Bowl Shuffle Biathlon at 8 a.m. at Kailua Pier. The race course will include a half-mile swim in Kailua Bay and a 3.1-mile run along Alii Drive. As always, there will be a shorter course — a 200-yard swim and a one-mile run — for anyone wanting to participate in this free community event. Masks, snorkels, fins and strollers are all welcome on the course.

On Feb. 3, Team Mango Races will host its Springtime Triathlon at 7 a.m. at Kailua Pier. This race will include a half-mile swim (two-lap course), a hilly three-lap bike course that totals 15 miles and a six-mile run.

There is a small fee for this race. For more information, visit teammangoraces.com.

Hope to see you all out there. Until next time, happy training.
