About 80,000 gallons of wastewater was discharged into catch basins at Waikoloa Beach Resort on Monday, Hawaii Water Service Company General Manager James Smith said Tuesday.
Smith said a broken joint restraint in a pump station precipitated the leak. Those restraints typically last the life of a facility, he added.
The solid materials from the wastewater were removed and the leak did not impact drinking water wells or coastal waters, Smith added. Hawaii Water employees conduct inspections daily, he said.
“I’m proud of the way our team responded and repaired the leak quickly to minimize impact on the community,” Smith said.
