Honokaa High and Intermediate School Natural Resources Program students recently visited the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.
At the garden, students saw more than 200 species of plants grown on traditional Hawaiian farms and in forests before Capt. James Cook arrived. They also made note of the Kona Field System stonework.
Students gave back to the garden by preparing a garden section for planting kalo.
Garden horticulturist Brian Kiyabu spoke to the students about college and career opportunities in biology, forestry and environmental studies.
The field trip was funded by a University of Hawaii Manoa College of Education Kulia I Ka Nuu Grant.
