Aloha Quilters of Kona meets on Saturday

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall Christ Episcopal Church in Kealakekua.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles.

The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

PTA convoys may delay traffic on Saturday

Oahu-based military units will convoy from Pohakuloa Training Area to Kawaihae Harbor between 6 a.m. and noon Saturday.

The units will convoy via Saddle Road, Mamalahoa Highway, Waikoloa Road, Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road, according to PTA officials.

The convoys will have Hawaii Police Department escorts front and rear. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive safely.

Community celebration for M.L. King birthday

The 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday commemoration begins at noon Sunday at the Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Events Pavilion.

The free event includes a community celebration, program and potluck. Live entertainment, personal reflections on King and the civil rights movement, as well as dance performances and an art display are also planned.

Keynote speaker Ernest D. Young Sr. will deliver King’s “Give us the Ballot” speech.

Amateur radio group meets on Sunday

The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park near the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority in North Kona.

Anyone interested in amateur radio is invited.

A Chinese food-themed potluck is planned. bring a dish to share.

The amateur radio enthusiast group meets the third Sunday of each month.

PEO meets for annual luncheon on Jan. 25

The local chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization will hold a no-host luncheon Jan. 25 in Kailua-Kona.

The organization will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Anthony’s By the Sea on Alii Drive.

Resident and visiting PEO members are invited to attend the annual meeting.
