Police arrested 25 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 7 and Monday; five were involved in traffic accidents.

Police made 44 suspected DUI arrests in 2013 compared with 45 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 11 motorists, South Hilo officers arrested five, South Kohala officers arrested four and Puna officers arrested three in their districts. Hamakua and North Kohala officers arrested one driver in each district.

There were 37 major accidents this year compared with 47 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island.
