Members of the Waimea Writers Support Group will be reading their prose and poetry for the public from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Tutu’s House in Waimea. The event is free.
AdvoCats meeting slated Saturday
AdvoCats meets at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road. AdvoCats is a nonprofit “trap-neuter-release” organization, committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way.
Upcoming clinics and other events will be on the agenda. Bring ink cartridges for recycling.

Club will hike from Lapakahi to Kapaa
The Kona Hiking Club will walk along the shoreline on the Ala Kahakai National Historical Trail on Saturday in the Kohala area. The hike will be about four miles roundtrip near the shoreline with minimal elevation change but sometimes challenging terrain because of some rocky areas and kiawe forest. Swimming or snorkeling (weather permitting) will be available at Mahukona in the middle of the hike. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are common in the area.
The group will hike from the old Hawaiian fishing village of Lapakahi to Kapaa and return to Lapakahi. Participants are requested to wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry 2 liters of water. Hiking sticks are advised for sections over loose rock. A broad-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, a snack or lunch, and binoculars are also recommended. A picnic lunch may be eaten at Lapakahi State Historical Park upon return.
Visitors as well as residents are invited to participate. Kailua-area carpoolers should meet at 7:30 a.m. and leave by 7:45 a.m. from Lanihau Center. They should park well away from the businesses, in the corner of the lot near Buns in the Sun. A hike leader will be present at the carpool location. There is no charge, but carpoolers are encouraged to contribute toward gasoline costs. Others may meet at 8:45 a.m. at the parking lot at Lapakahi State Historical Park.

VFW ladies auxiliary meets Saturday
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 ladies auxiliary meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Elks Lodge in Kailua-Kona. The group will discuss future plans, the selection of committee chairwomen and the state VFW convention.

Lanihau Cruise Night slated Saturday
A Cruise Night is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Lanihau Center in Kailua-Kona. The free event is open to all vehicles, from antiques to hot rods, imports, trucks and bikes. There is no entry fee; most owners cruise in, park for a while and move out at their own pace.
Arc of Kona is this month’s featured nonprofit. Anyone making a donation to the group will receive entry in a drawing for items donated by the center’s merchants.
Eddie O from LAVA radio will emcee the event that will also feature demonstrations by the Big Island Kart Club.
