SUV hits tow truck on Pali Highway, driver killed
HONOLULU — Police say an SUV driver in his 80s was killed on the Pali Highway after hitting a flat-bed tow truck.
The accident prompted the closure of all lanes of the main route between Kailua and downtown Honolulu on Thursday morning.
Authorities say a woman in her 80s was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Traffic investigators tell KITV-TV the tow truck was driving toward downtown Honolulu and made a U-turn on across a grass median. But the end of the truck was sticking out into the lanes when the SUV hit it. The vehicle then spun into the lanes going toward Kailua.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser says the lanes going toward downtown Honolulu have been reopened.
Solar Park gets military OK
HONOLULU — Construction is expected to begin this month on a solar park containing 21,000 panels on 20 acres near Oahu’s Ewa Field.
The location is the former World War II-era Marine Corps airstrip.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the commander of Navy Region Hawaii has approved the Kalaeloa Renewable Energy Park’s environmental assessment.
The Hawaii state Public Utilities Commission in November approved a power purchase agreement between the power producer and Hawaiian Electric Co.
Hawaii seeks comment on whale sanctuary management
HONOLULU — The state of Hawaii is asking the public to submit comments on the management of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources said Wednesday it’s gathering feedback as part of a regular review. The deadline for submitting comments is Feb. 7.
A federal agency — the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — gathered comments on the issue in 2010.
NOAA and DLNR plan to consider the comments they both collect for one document they will produce together.
The department says the comments NOAA collected in 2010 are already under full consideration and don’t need to be resubmitted to the state.
NOAA and DLNR manage the sanctuary jointly.
They are legally mandated to review their management regularly.
Woman dies after being hit by car
HONOLULU — A woman has died of injuries sustained on Oahu when she was struck by a car while walking alongside Kalanianaole Highway.
Hawaii News Now says the woman who was in her 30s was taken to Queen’s Medical Center early Thursday morning where she later died. Emergency Medical Services says the accident near Poalima and Moole streets occurred at 1:07 a.m. Roads near the accident were closed temporarily while police investigated.
