Meditation class
sited in Volcano
A free class on the Four Noble Truths, the essence of Buddha’s teachings, is slated from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Participants will hear the teachings of Buddha and practice meditation. Everyone is welcome; dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Chamber hosts summit on island’s future
The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce will present the Hawaii Island Economic Summit 2013 — Continuing the Conversation from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
The summit will feature a panel discussion on areas that could positively impact the future of Hawaii Island: education, employment, energy, health care and sustainability. Three guests will participate on each panel, discussing their work with audience members.
Attendees will learn about current trends and projects, new ventures and missions, and future dreams and visions.

Salsa classes to be taught in Waimea
The Waimea Ballroom Dance Club will offer salsa lessons Mondays at 7 p.m. beginning Monday and continuing through Feb. 18 in the Waimea Elementary School cafeteria. Students can register at 6:30 p.m. before either of the first two classes.
Annual club membership is $15. The six-week salsa course costs $10. Each lesson lasts one hour and is followed by a 30-minute practice mixer. No partner is necessary to attend the classes, instructed by Lance Oliver.

Weavers group meeting Monday
Monday Weavers meets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Island Yarn and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St. Sponsored by the Big Island chapter of the Hawaii Handweavers Hui, the event is free and open to the public to discuss and share weaving ideas and projects. Samples from a recent linen and lace workshop will be discussed.
Those new to weaving, as well as experienced fiber artists are welcome.

senior yoga classes
Hawaii County Elderly Recreation Services offers a series of yoga classes for anyone 55 and older. Senior yoga consists of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
Classes are planned at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Jan. 29 at Yano Hall.
Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. Mondays and Fridays (Jan. 18 and 25) at Hale Halawai. Classes cost $10 per month; registration and payment can be made the first day of class.

Kona Stories hosts monthly book clubs that are free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to read the book in advance and be prepared for discussion. The Second Tuesday Fiction Group meets Tuesday to discuss “Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness.” Alexandra Fuller’s book traces the stories of her parents’ childhoods in Kenya and England, recounts her own African upbringing and offers insight into the impact of their beliefs and the waning of the British Empire on her parents’ marriage.
The Just the Facts Group meets at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 to discuss Wade Davis’ “Into the Silence.” Davis, explorer in residence at National Geographic, chronicles the expeditions of George Mallory, the first Englishman to attempt to climb Mt. Everest.
