Big Island police have identified a man who went missing Sunday while swimming in waters off Kehena Beach in Puna.

Eric T. Dietz, 29, of no permanent address was last seen around 2:40 p.m. Sunday swimming in rough waters off the lower Puna beach, according to the Hawaii Police Department. He apparently experienced difficulties returning to shore.

A bodyboarder managed to get within reach of Dietz but lost sight of him after being caught in rough surf, according to police, who noted the bodyboarder made it to shore safely.

Dietz, also known as “Eroz” and “Arrows,” is described as Caucasian, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair, according to police. He has facial hair and a multicolored tattoo on his upper right arm depicting a bird, spider and tortoise shell.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Detective Joel Field at 961-2381 or the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
