Rescue workers were unable to locate a swimmer in distress at Kehena Beach Sunday afternoon.
According to the Fire Department, witnesses reported seeing a man swept out of the bay by the high surf and strong current. The man apparently went under the water about 100 yards offshore.
A U.S. Coast Guard crew assisted the Fire Department in searching for the missing man for about three hours, until it was too dark to continue the search. Officials intended to resume the search Monday morning.
