Singles planning Wednesday lunch
Kona Kupuna Singles Club meets for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tracy’s Tasteeze Deli. Call 324-1570 for reservations or more information.
Three authors featured at Tuesday event
The Words and Wine event hosted by Kona Stories Book Shop begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The event is free to the public and offers a chance to meet some of Kona’s favorite authors while enjoying pupu and wine. Featured authors this month will be Mike Bond, Jack Gage and Gina Franchini.
Bond, author of “In Saving Paradise,” weaves a story of a beautiful journalist drowning mysteriously off Waikiki. Former Special Forces veteran Pono Hawkins, now a well-known Hawaii surfer and international correspondent for surfing magazines, soon gets embroiled in trying to find why she died.
Gage’s “The Fact/Faith Debate, Why Science Hasn’t Killed Religion” discusses the 10,000 religions worldwide, 18 of which are major Christian religions, and among Christians there are 9,000 separate denominations and how they came into existence. Biblical explanation for the beginning of the human race and the world, Gage tells us, “have been considered valid for a very long time by a lot of people and are still believed to be correct by a majority of Christians and Jews, scientific explanations notwithstanding.” Not everyone accepts the biblical version, of course, just as some disregard what many see as scientific “proof.” This, Gage suggests, is the source of the fact/faith debate.
Franchini, author of the “Island Naturals Cookbook,” is a longtime resident of the Big Island. The book offers more 100 recipes for favorite dishes, including lasagna and carrot cake and everything in between.
Kona Stories is located in Keauhou Shopping Center.
