Fire officials are investigating the cause of a structure fire early Wednesday in Honomu.
Responding to the 6:14 a.m. report, firefighters found a single-family home on Puako Street engulfed in flames, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. An occupant was rescued from the structure by a neighbor before firefighters arrived. The patient was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.
Firefighters declared the blaze under control around 6:50 a.m. and extinguished by 7:30 a.m., according to the department. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
