Fire officials are investigating the cause of a structure fire early Wednesday in Honomu.
Responding to the 6:14 a.m. report, firefighters found a single-family home in Puako Street engulfed in flames, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. An occupant had been removed from the structure by a neighbor before the department’s arrival. The patient was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.
Firefighters declared the blaze under control around 6:50 a.m. and extinguished by 7:30 a.m., according to the department. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
