An autopsy conducted Wednesday determined 32-year-old Faafetai Fiu died from blood loss due to multiple gunshot wounds following a reported shooting Saturday night in Hilo, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The medical examiner ruled Fiu’s death as a homicide, according to police. Detectives are awaiting additional toxicological findings. No suspects have been identified at this time.
At 8:47 p.m. Saturday, police received a number of calls of possible gunshots heard in the area of Mooheau Park in Hilo, according to police. Responding officers discovered an unresponsive man with apparent gunshot wounds.
Detectives are continuing to follow up on leads and also want to interview fishermen who frequent the Bayfront area and who may have left before police could contact them. In addition, police are asking that motorists or pedestrians call police if they were in the area and witnessed a confrontation near a silver or light-colored vehicle that was parked on the makai shoulder of the highway just makai of the ball field.
