University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood and representatives from the UH System administration and UH Board of Regents will visit the UH Center, West Hawaii from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 9.
The community forum will be an opportunity for the public and members of the UH community, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to share their thoughts on the university and its future.
NARFE holiday party slated for Jan. 12
All active and retired federal employees are invited to attend the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1802 holiday party at 9 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Waikoloa Marriott Beach Resort. The cost is $27 and includes a breakfast buffet, tax and tip. The chapter will also install its 2013 officers during the event.

‘Voice of the Wood’
to entertain, educate Jan. 7 in Kohala
The Voice of the Wood Cello Chamber Players will perform from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at the North Kohala Public Library.
The program is designed to entertain and educate children and adults and features a variety of classical, Hawaiian and contemporary music. Performers will introduce each piece of music in a humorous and conversational way.
The ensemble includes Marilyn Hof, Michael Marecak and Shirley Marecak on cello; Katherine Thayer and Natalie Hill on violin; Wanda Beck on viola; and Larry Beck playing oboe.

Kue Petition one-act play presented Jan. 13
The public is invited to a presentation of “Ka Lei Maile Alii — The Queen’s Women” at 1 p.m. Jan. 13 at the site of the old Kona Lagoon Hotel, just south of the recently closed Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.
The one-act play recounts a now famous meeting held in Hilo in 1897 regarding the Kue Petition. Signed by more than 90 percent of the Native Hawaiian population, the petition protested annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The Kona Hawaiian Civic Club and Keauhou-Kahaluu Educational Group are partnering for the event, which will include local actors in a staged reading of the play.
The play is based on a newspaper article by Miriam Michelson, who attended the 1897 meeting. Written by Didi Lee Kawai, the play re-creates what it was like to participate in the petition’s signing. Radio personalities Kaea Alapai and Sherry Bracken will play the roles of Abigail Campbell, who was instrumental in urging her fellow Hawaiians to sign the petition, and Michelson, respectively.
On view at the event will be the original Kue Petition Sign Display that toured the U.S. and was exhibited on the National Mall. Each sign has the name of someone who signed the petition, including many Hawaii Island residents and kupuna from many Hawaii Island families.
This program is free and all are welcome. Attendees are invited to dress in period clothing of the late 1800s. They are also invited to bring hookupu, an offering, for the Keauhou-Kahaluu Educational Group that stewards the Kahaluu Manowai lands owned by Kamehameha Schools. The organization welcomes native plants to be used to nurture the area. Attendees may bring lei to drape on the kupuna name signs.
