Police arrested 33 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 17 and Sunday; three were involved in traffic accidents, and three were younger than 21.

Police arrested 33 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 17 and Sunday; three were involved in traffic accidents, and three were younger than 21.

Police have made 1,459 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,416 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 12 motorists while Kona officers arrested 10, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested six motorists and Puna officers five.

There have been 1,413 major accidents this year compared with 1,379 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 38 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 21 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say 12 of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 12 to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
