A foodie’s dream, The Spoon Shop in Kailua-Kona offers high quality goods and inspiring ideas for all things culinary.
The new specialty retailer catering to culinary professionals, amateurs and enthusiasts opened in October. Owned by Kona residents Tracy Ackerman and Preston Crowl, The Spoon Shop is located in the former Gourmet Chefs Supply on Luhia Street in the Old Industrial Area near Pacific Island Fitness.
For roughly 10 years, there has been a cooking supply store at this location, helping ensure kitchens are well-stocked. Crowl said he and his wife are thankful for the foundation previous owners left. They are looking forward to building on the momentum and taking the store much further.
According to Crowl, their goal is to stock staples, as well as all the cutting-edge tools, for creating and enjoying food. They will be attending an international trade show in March in Chicago, where they’ll learn about the latest and greatest kitchen appliances and gadgets for 2013.
The couple has been “feverishly” stocking the shelves with a host of new gizmos, such as the award-winning Garlic Twist and Aerolatte milk frother. Some of the inventory is geared for perfecting culinary creations with ease; others are for holiday gift-giving, like the scientific, yet fun Molecular Gastronomy Kit.
There’s also a big selection of barware, napkins, aprons and Chef Wear, and novelty items like Hawaiian-themed cutting boards. The Spoon Shop also has a separate room full of essentials for baking and candy making, complete with a wide variety of cookie cutters and candy molds.
Its grilling and barbecue selections for the outdoor chef will eventually be expanded, Crowl added.
Offering quality, name-brand products from the U.S. and abroad, The Spoon Shop sells cookwear by Scanpan, LeCreuset, Lodge and All-Clad. Featured cutlery lines include Wusthof, Global, Chun and Forschner/Victorinox.
The shop is also a drop-off site for Scott’s Knife Sharpening, and the return time for that service is two to three days, Ackerman said.
With new inventory arriving weekly, Crowl said new products will be advertised on the shop’s Facebook page and upcoming website.
The Spoon Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 329-2433.
