Comical choices made
With all the sadness and turmoil in the world, I really enjoyed and got a wonderful chuckle regarding your article “Rules set for January plastic bag ban.”
The first thought that came to mind was how many County Council members and how many Department of Environmental Management personnel does it take to screw in a light bulb?
God help us if these rocket scientists should actually have to deal with a real issue.
Also amusing was the bags with no handles versus the bags with handles. What’s the deal with that? “splain it to me, Lucy.”
One has to wonder what the actual costs to the taxpayers have been to fund this fact-finder nonsense over the past year or so.
How was Jan. 17th. selected to begin the bag ban? Why not Jan. 1 or Jan. 31? Did the rocket scientists pull a number out of a hat and hand out door prizes?
I’ve never been to a County Council meeting, but I’m now planning to do so. I’m sure that it’ll be very entertaining. Hopefully the County Council members will be in costume.

The horror of the recent shooting of precious children has been impossible to understand. But what I do understand is that assault weapons do not have a place on the Big Island.
I am not talking about guns in general, rather those weapons that were made to kill others quickly. To use those identified by Dennis Brown’s Dec. 20 letter, they include: Glock 9mm pistols, Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistols and Walther weapons — if I have misstated or misnamed an assault weapon it was done out of ignorance, not intent.
As I read the paper, listen to the news and speak with family members, it is apparent that everyone agrees something needs to be done.
While a national discussion is very appropriate for long-term resolution there are those, myself included, who would like to see some kind of action now.
May I respectfully suggest that our city council outlaw assault weapons on the Big Island ? To remind you, I am not referring to anything but those guns that were not developed for hunting or recreational use.
Council members, let’s not do this by discussing it ad nauseam, rather break the mold and just pass something. By doing this, we on the Big Island, would be making a powerful statement against violence, in this instance involving assault weapons.
Could such a law stand up under the soon to be lawsuits and public outcry? Possibly not, but it would affirm that the Big Island stands for nonviolence and loving aloha.
