The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf warning for the Big Island’s east-facing shores through 6 p.m.
The service also issued a high surf advisory for the island’s north-facing shores through 6 a.m. Sunday.
Waves along east-facing shores are forecast to range in height from 10 to 15 feet. Along east-facing shores, the waves are forecast to range in height from 6 to 10 feet, according to the service. Waves are expected to peak today and dissipate on Sunday and Monday.
A high surf advisory means waves along affected shores will be higher than normal and dangerous rip currents are expected. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and well away from the shore break. A warning indicates that dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline resulting in very dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents.
