Firefighters are continuing mop-up efforts today to extinguish a brush fire that consumed about 15 acres east of Naalehu.
Fire crews on Friday were to spend the day monitoring and dousing any hot spots remaining from the fire, which ignited Wednesday evening in pasture land makai of Highway 11, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. Motorists are advised to use caution near mile marker 63.
Battalion Chief Joseph Farias III said if conditions do not change, the fire would likely be declared out this afternoon.
Highway 11 was closed in the area for several hours before opening to one lane of travel. The highway reopened about 4 a.m. on Thursday, according to police.
