The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory for the Big Island through Monday evening.
Strong and gusty trade winds are occurring. These sustained east winds are between 15 to 30 mph, with localized gusts of more than 50 mph. Conditions are expected to increase today and Monday, according to the service’s Honolulu Forecast Office.
Winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
According to Hawaii Electric Light Co., the impact of these high winds could have an effect on its system because of trees, branches or other objects contacting its lines.
The public should not approach or touch any downed power lines or equipment, stay as far away as possible from a downed power line, and report any damage or outages to HELCO’s dispatch center at 969-6666. If a power outage should occur, HELCO said its employees will work as quickly as possible to restore service.
