Kona Frame Shop presents an exhibit of Tom Yessis’ oil paintings through December. From the sunny Kona-Kohala Coast to the valleys and waterfalls of Hamakua and the tropical rain forests of Hilo, Yessis captures the drama, beauty and vivid colors and light of Hawaii’s most diverse island. His passion for the ocean and outdoors is reflected in each piece.
The artist works in the studio and en plein air. “I like to paint on location as often as possible, and simplify the subject matter down to the essentials, leaving out anything that may distract from my composition.” Yessis said. “The natural light and colors have so much more dimension, I would lose some of the color relationships painting from a photograph.”
Yessis often creates small paintings, “jewels,” so he can catch what first attracts him to the scene before the light changes.
Yessis’ work will be displayed during regular hours at the Kona Frame Shop, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. For more information, call 329-1722, email info@konaframeshop.com or visit konaframeshop.com.
