Mokuaikaua plans Christmas fair
Mokuaikaua Church on Alii Drive will hold its Christmas Jubilee Craft Fair, sponsored by the youth ministry, from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Local vendors, entertainment, gift wrapping, a bake sale, steak fry and prize drawing are planned.
Jabberbookys Book Club meets Thursday
The Jabberbookys Book Club meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Island Naturals Kona. The club discusses several books with a common theme each month. December’s theme is African-Americans. The chosen books are “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines, “The Emperor of Ocean Park” by Stephen L. Carter and “Intruder in the Dust” by William Faulkner.
Attendees are asked to read at least one book from the list and be prepared for a discussion. New members and guests are welcomed.

Calendar features Pierce’s photos
In a continued partnership with OfficeMax, the Lyman Museum presents another Historic Hilo calendar for 2013, which is now available in the museum shop. The calendar serves as an introduction to the John Howard Pierce Photograph Collection, the subject of a Lyman Museum special exhibit expected to open in 2013.
Pierce worked for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald from 1950 to 1968 and became curator of the Lyman Museum upon his retirement. He was an avid photographer, taking thousands of photographs of Hawaii Island from the time he arrived in 1950 until his death in 1979. The importance of the collection lies in the period it covers: those years before and after statehood, a time of tremendous growth and change, especially in Hilo. Pierce’s photographic subjects include, but are not limited to, business and commerce, land development and construction, tourism, public events, natural disasters and — the focus of most of his attention — his adopted community of Hilo.
The 2013 Historic Hilo calendar sells for $9.99 in the museum shop, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Orders are available by phone, call 935-5021.
The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum is located at 276 Haili St. in Hilo.
Chamberlin Baut completes training
Air Force Airman 1st Class Chanel K. Chamberlin Baut graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Chamberlin Baut is the daughter of Jonelle Vita of Hilo. She is a 2010 graduate of Waiakea High School.
