IRVING, Texas — Police charged Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent with intoxication manslaughter Saturday after he flipped his car in a pre-dawn accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown.
Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz said the accident happened about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the Dallas suburb, hours before Brent was to be on a team flight to Cincinnati for the Cowboys’ game Sunday against the Bengals.
Argumaniz said the 25-year-old Brown — a practice-squad linebacker who also was Brent’s teammate for three seasons at the University of Illinois — was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead at a hospital.
Brown died a week after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend before killing himself in front of his coach and general manager.
Officers conducted a field sobriety test on Brent and arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, Argumaniz said. The charge, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison, was upgraded after Brown was pronounced dead.
Jets TE Keller downgraded to

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Jets tight end Dustin Keller will miss New York’s game at Jacksonville on Sunday because of a sprained left ankle.
Keller was listed as doubtful Friday after injuring his ankle last Sunday in the Jets’ 7-6 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He is second on the team with 28 receptions despite missing four games earlier this season with a hamstring injury. Keller, who sat out practice all week, will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by backup Jeff Cumberland, who has 21 catches this season.
The Jets will also be without backup defensive tackle Damon Harrison, who turned an ankle during practice Thursday.
Backup quarterback Tim Tebow, recovering from two broken ribs, was expected to be a game-time decision.

PHILADELPHIA — A person familiar with the trade says the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired seven-time All-Star infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for two relief pitchers.
Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause on Saturday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced. The Phillies are sending right-hander Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers to get Young, who fills a void at third base. The Rangers also will pay a significant portion of Young’s salary for 2013. Young is due to earn $16 million. Reports say the Phillies will pay him about $6 million.
Young batted .277 with eight homers and 67 RBIs in 2012, a down year for him. In the nine previous seasons, Young hit at least .300 seven times and averaged 17 homers and 90 RBIs. A former AL Gold Glove winner at shortstop, Young hasn’t play third base regularly since 2010. Seven Phillies started at third base last year, including often-injured former All-Star Placido Polanco.
Cincinnati hires Tuberville as
football coach
CINCINNATI — Texas Tech’s Tommy Tuberville was hired Saturday as Cincinnati’s next football coach, leaving the Big 12 for a school trying to move up to a better conference.
The agreement came one day after Butch Jones left to become Tennessee’s next football coach, ending a week of uncertainty for the Bearcats (9-3). Cincinnati has won a share of four of the last five Big East titles and will play in the Belk Bowl.
Tuberville went 20-17 in three seasons at Texas Tech, after coaching at Mississippi and Auburn. The Red Raiders (7-5) will play Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl after missing out on a bowl last season.
Tuberville resigned as Texas Tech’s coach on Saturday afternoon.
His hiring ends a streak of Cincinnati getting its head coaches from smaller conferences. It’s athletic director Whit Babcock’s most significant hire in his first year at the school.
US women beat China 2-0
DETROIT — Carli Lloyd and Sydney Leroux scored in the second half, and the U.S. women’s soccer team beat China 2-0 on Saturday to remain unbeaten on its post-Olympic tour.
Lloyd broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute, taking a pass from Tobin Heath near the edge of the penalty area, cutting to her left and beating goalie Zhang Yue to the near post from about 12 yards. Leroux added an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
Morgan was credited with an assist to Leroux to become only the second player in team history to reach at least 20 goals and 20 assists in one year. Mia Hamm was the other in 1998.
The U.S. is unbeaten in its last 18 meetings with China. American forward Amy Rodriguez became the 29th player to make 100 appearances with the U.S. women.
