A 45-year-old Puna man is facing burglary, assault and threatening offenses stemming from a reported domestic dispute Sunday in Pahoa.
Peter Lopes, of Pahoa, was charged Tuesday evening with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and second-degree terroristic threatening, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $37,000.
Lopes was also arrested Sunday on suspicion of arson and promoting a detrimental drug, however, prosecutors declined to charge him pending additional follow-up investigation, according to police.
The charges stem from an 8 p.m. Sunday police and fire department response to structure fire at a Hawaiian Beach home, according to police. Upon arrival, they discovered a house engulfed in flames.
Police determined that the occupants, a 41-year-old Pahoa woman and Lopes, had exited the home prior to the fire and were not injured, according to police. Investigation revealed Lopes had allegedly threatened to set the house on fire.
Police found Lopes at a nearby home with a head injury unrelated to the structure fire. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment and arrested after being discharged, according to police.
