Hoopono instructor to speak at NFB meeting

Glenn Nakagawara of Hoopono, the state agency for the blind, will speak at the National Federation of the Blind West Hawaii chapter meeting at 10 a.m. Monday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Nakagawara will discuss training and resources available for the blind and those with low vision through Hoopono, as well as vocational rehabilitation opportunities.

The meeting is open to anyone dealing with vision loss, their caregivers and teachers.

Local chocolate festival scheduled for Dec. 16

The fourth annual Chocolate Chocolate, a celebration of local cacao, is slated from 2 to 8 p.m. Dec. 16 at One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau. Nat Bletter, co-founder of Madre Chocolate is the event’s guest presenter.

Bletter leads a cacao farm tour and chocolate-making workshop from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $25.

A cacao-themed dinner is planned from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. featuring locally made cacao nib fettuccine and chocolate cheesecake. The meal costs $35 per person.

Bletter will demonstrate chocolate tempering and moulding from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event costs $15 and includes tasting.

Participants may attend the full program of events for $55; $100 for couples.

Weavers group
meeting Monday

Monday Weavers will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Island Yarns and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St. The event is free and open to beginning and experienced fiber artists to share ideas and discuss projects.

Kahakai council
meets Tuesday

The Kahakai Elementary School Community Council meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the office conference room.

Items up for discussion include the final approval of the 2013-14 academic and financial plan and preparation of the council waiver/exception requests for submission by Dec. 14.

Parents and community members are welcome to attend.

Hospice presents holiday grief workshop

Dana Moody, director of bereavement services for Hospice of Kona, will conduct a free grief and the holidays workshop from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 19 at hospice’s community service center, 74-4925 Walua Road, Kailua-Kona. Moody will share advice to help those dealing with grief and the loss of a loved one during the holidays. Refreshments will be served.

Hospital auxiliary meets Monday

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary board meets at 1 p.m. Monday at the Pines Commercial Center. Call 938-9694 for directions.
