Panel to register Native Hawaiians this weekend
The Native Hawaiian Roll Commission will be on Hawaii island Friday and Saturday. The five-member commission will conduct informational community workshops, in addition to its monthly meetings. The commission will be registering Native Hawaiians and supporters to organize and form a sovereign entity.
The 2011 census records indicate there are more than 500,000 Native Hawaiians who reside statewide and on the U.S. mainland. NHRC expects to register as many Hawaiians as possible by July who are Native Hawaiian; 18 years of age; who demonstrates unrelinquished sovereignty as declared by their cultural, civic and social connection. Once the base roll has been completed, NHRC will dissolve.
The meetings will be held at 5 p.m. at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center in Hilo on Friday; 10 a.m. Saturday at Imiola Congregational Church in Waimea and 4 p.m. Saturday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale. Meditation class scheduled for Sunday
The public is invited to learn to meditate or deepen its meditation, according to the authentic teachings of Buddha, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center, Niaulani Campus. The class is free, and beginners as well as advanced meditaters are welcome. Those attending should dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Winterfest slated Saturday in Keauhou
Hawaii Montessori Schools, Kona Campus’ 13th annual Winterfest is slated from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Keauhou Shopping Center.
Craft making, games and other activities are planned for children. The event also features a bake sale and silent auction for items and activities donated by local businesses. Hawaii Montessori Schools students will entertain with a holiday performance to kick off the event. Performances by Temana Rose Tahitian Dance Halau and West Hawaii Dance Academy are also planned.
Admission is free. Each booth requires a nominal fee for participation. Coupon books, which include tickets for crafts, games and bouncer activities, may be purchased in advance for $10 at both the Kona and Waimea campuses of Hawaii Montessori Schools and at Los Habaneros at the shopping center.
