Panel to register Native Hawaiians this weekend

The Native Hawaiian Roll Commission will be on Hawaii island Friday and Saturday. The five-member commission will conduct informational community workshops, in addition to its monthly meetings. The commission will be registering Native Hawaiians and supporters to organize and form a sovereign entity.

The 2011 census records indicate there are more than 500,000 Native Hawaiians who reside statewide and on the U.S. mainland. NHRC expects to register as many Hawaiians as possible by July who are Native Hawaiian; 18 years of age; who demonstrates unrelinquished sovereignty as declared by their cultural, civic and social connection. Once the base roll has been completed, NHRC will dissolve.

The meetings will be held at 5 p.m. at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center in Hilo on Friday; 10 a.m. Saturday at Imiola Congregational Church in Waimea and 4 p.m. Saturday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale. Refreshments will be served. For reservations or more information, call 594-0088 or email cathy.hedges@kanaiolowalu.org
