The hui welcomes Kaulana Iokia, West Hawaii community liason for the Partners in Development Foundation’s Hui Hoomalu Program. Iokia will present “The 40 Developmental Assets,” positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults.

‘Pregnant’ banana to be opened Saturday
at Greenwell garden
Maia hapai — a Hawaiian “pregnant banana” — will be opened, revealing the compressed fruit bunch that has formed within its stem, Saturday at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.
Maia hapai is a Hawaiian banana variety that typically bears fruit out of the top of the stem. Sometimes, however, the developing bunch is not able to push out into the open, and the fruit forms within the stem. Getting to the bananas requires a kind of operation and the bunch comes out glistening and compacted, with the bunch stalk coiled to fit within the stem. It is rare, and seldom bears fruit in the “pregnant” style.
The stalk will be cut open during the regular guided native plant walk at 1 p.m. Regular admission will be charged. Maia hapai plants will also be available for purchase.
