Browns employee kills self at practice center

BEREA, Ohio — A member of the Cleveland Browns’ grounds crew killed himself at their practice facility, a team spokesman said Sunday.

The man’s body was found Saturday morning at the facility in suburban Cleveland, the same day Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager after earlier killing his girlfriend.

Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis confirmed to The Associated Press that a team employee died of a suicide but provided no other details. He released a statement calling the man a good friend and an outstanding employee and saying the team’s heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Kenyan beats wind to win Vegas marathon

LAS VEGAS — Overcoming strong winds, Kenya’s Jonathan Ndambuki was the star headliner on the Las Vegas Strip, winning the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon on Sunday night.

The 36-year-old Ndambuki finished with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes and 24 seconds — just more than a minute in front of his closest competitor, 31-year old Steve Dekoker, of Seattle, who finished the 26.2 mile race in 2:33:22.

The women’s overall winner was 42-year-old Nuta Olaru, who finished in 2:51:31. Adrian Neal, 29, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was second in 2:51:33, followed by Dani Fischer, 24, of Madison, Wis., in 2:59:20.

Roddick loses
final to Almagro

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. —Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat Andy Roddick 6-4, 7-5 in the Miami Tennis Cup exhibition final on Sunday.

Roddick, who retired at the U.S. Open, was broken once in each set. He dropped the ninth game of the first set at 30-40 on a netted backhand. Roddick saved a break point in the ninth game of the second set but had no answer for an Almagro forehand crosscourt passing shot at 30-40 in the 11th game. Almagro lost both times he played Roddick in tour matches.
