Gary Eoff will lead contemporary gourd carving workshops Dec. 7 and 8 at Imiloa Astronomy Center. Participants will learn how to grow, carve, dye and finish gourds using traditional Hawaiian techniques.

Eoff is an artist and craftsman with an emphasis on handmade things of Old Hawaii. Inspired by the aesthetics, intricate techniques and natural materials used by Hawaiians, Eoff has studied the art of gourd carving, cordage making, weaving, tools, weapons and fishing implements.

All materials are supplied, including gourds, carving tools and an information packet.

One-day workshops are planned from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 8. The cost is $110 for members; $135 for nonmembers.
