‘Mystery of the Christmas Star’ returns to Imiloa on Dec. 7
“Mystery of the Christmas Star” returns for a limited run playing at 7 p.m. Dec. 7, 21 and 28 at Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo.
The program, an Imiloa holiday tradition since 2006, takes audiences on a journey back 2,000 years to Bethlehem to discover a possible scientific explanation for the star the wise men followed to find the baby Jesus. It delves into recorded sightings of significant astronomical events during the time of Christ’s birth. Investigators will see which of these signs in the sky could have been remarkable enough to cause the wise men to travel across the desert from Babylon just to see a newborn king.
Tickets are nonrefundable and cost $8 for members; $10 for nonmembers. Purchase tickets at the front desk or by phone at 969-9703 during regular business hours. Tickets will also be sold prior to the show.
Imiloa will be closed Christmas and New Year’s days. Normal hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Shamanic workshop scheduled for Tuesday
For those who have ever wished to get answers on health issues or complicated choices, “Introduction to Shamanic Journeying” will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dragonfly Ranch in Honaunau.
Sequoia, who has recently moved here from Kauai, is teaching the workshop for a “love offering.” The suggested donation is $5 to $10.
Using a drumbeat to help achieve the shamanic state, Sequoya helps guide individuals into the shamanic realm. Sequoya claims that the people she guides gain direct information specifically for their personal issues.
Sequoya has been practicing shamanism for more than 15 years. During that time she completed a comprehensive apprenticeship in the core shamanic lineage and maintains an active connection with a circle of advanced shamanic practitioners. Sequoya offers private sessions, including power animal retrievals and soul retrievals, by appointment at 494-9132.

Family reading program meets Tuesday night
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona hosts “Books are Building Blocks,” a free family read aloud program, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Local TV personality Jane Clement is December’s guest speaker. She will share about her recent trip to the Philippines with Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi. Clement will also talk about Filipino culture and holiday traditions.
Parents must attend the program with their children. There will be separate reading groups: kindergarten, grades 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and parents. A leader of each group will read, then conduct a discussion about the reading.
Registration is 4:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the library; registration is limited to 75 participants. Refreshments on the lanai follow the program.

Words and Wine event is Tuesday evening
The public is invited to meet authors at the monthly Words and Wine Event hosted by Kona Stories Book Shop. The free event begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Featured authors are Marilyn McFarlane of Portland, Ore., and Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region.
When attempting to find a simple, engaging, and unbiased approach to world religions for her own family, McFarlane discovered such a book did not exist. Understanding how important it is for children to build both respect for and knowledge of a variety of religions, regardless of their own faith, McFarlane created “Sacred Stories: Wisdom from World Religions.”
Representatives of Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region will discuss “This We Believe: Hawaii Island, Waikoloa Region,” a collection of stories, poems, recipes and photographs that represent the sights, sounds and aloha of Hawaii.
