The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for the Big Island’s north- and east-facing shores through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
A north swell combined with breezy trade winds will cause rough surf particularly along the island’s east-facing shores, according to the service. It forecast surf will range between 6 and 10 feet in height.
A high surf advisory means that waves along the affected shores will be higher than normal. Beach goers are urged to stay out of the water and well away from the shore break because of hazardous waves and strong rip currents.
