Kevin McHale’s daughter dies at 23
HOUSTON — The daughter of Houston Rockets coach Kevin McHale died at 23.
Alexandra “Sasha” McHale died Saturday, and the team disclosed no other details Sunday.
Kevin McHale has been on leave since Nov. 10 to deal with what the team called a personal family matter. During his absence, Kelvin Sampson has been the interim coach. There is no timetable for Kevin McHale’s return.
Team owner Leslie Alexander said in a statement that he extends his “deepest condolences” over the loss of the McHales’ “beautiful daughter.” He called Kevin and wife Lynn “loving and dedicated parents who will need our continued support throughout this very difficult time.” He said the “entire organization is mourning.”
Argonauts beat Stampeders 35-22
to win Grey Cup
TORONTO — Chad Owens, Pacino Horne and Dontrelle Inman scored in the first half and the Toronto Argonauts, beat the Calgary Stampeders 35-22 on Sunday in the 100th Grey Cup.
Andre Durie added a touchdown in the second half for the Argonauts, who built a 24-6 halftime lead and never trailed while playing in front of a loud home crowd of 53,208 at Rogers Centre. Toronto earned its 16th Grey Cup title and first since 2004.
Rene Paredes kicked four field goals for Calgary. Backup QB Bo Levi Mitchell threw a touchdown pass to Maurice Price in the fourth quarter, and the pair connected again for a 2-point conversion. But it was too late to make a difference.
Chad Kackert had 133 yards rushing for Toronto and was awarded outstanding player of the Grey Cup. Argonauts defensive end Ricky Foley was the most outstanding Canadian in the CFL’s marquee game.
Vettel wins 3rd straight F1 title in Brazil
SAO PAULO — Sebastian Vettel captured his third straight Formula One championship title Sunday, overcoming a first-lap crash to finish sixth in a Brazilian Grand Prix won by Jenson Button under pouring rain.
Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, F1’s most successful driver, finished seventh in his final race after 19 seasons. Minutes before the race, he lapped the track with a flag with the words “Thank You.” He used the radio to thank the mechanics and engineers he has worked with as well as his fans watching on TV.
Colts’ Pagano waves to crowd from owner’s box
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts head coach Chuck Pagano received a standing ovation from the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd during Sunday’s game against Buffalo.
With 11:23 left in the fourth quarter, team owner Jim Irsay walked outside his owner’s box with Pagano and the two waved to the crowd.
Between the third and fourth quarters, two Colts cheerleaders shaved their heads after a fundraising drive raised more than $22,000 for leukemia research.
