Longing for a good old-fashioned steakhouse?

Longing for a good old-fashioned steakhouse?

A new family-casual restaurant in Kailua-Kona hopes to fire up diners’ interest in steak, seafood and its salad bar.

Kona Beach Steak House, which opened last week, replaces Shivalik Indian Cuisine on Alii Drive. While there was a loyal following for Indian food, it wasn’t enough to meet the high costs of running a business, said Food and Beverage Manager Corey Branch.

Also, the giant space with its spectacular view overlooking Kailua Bay is a better fit for a steakhouse to go head-to-head against the nearby competition, he added.

The same family that opened Shivalik Indian Cuisine nearly two years ago owns Kona Beach Steak House, and the owners hope to reopen their Indian restaurant somewhere on the island, ideally nearby its new joint, sometime next year, Branch said.

For those still craving a taste of India and their favorite dishes, catering is still available. However, a three-day notice is required, said General Manager Sam Sudhakaran.

The Kona Beach Steak House is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Its menu features familiar American favorites, such as a New York strip steak with vegetables and rice or a baked potato ($22.95); a burger with American or Swiss cheese and french fries ($10.50); and a club sandwich with french fries ($8.95). Seafood lovers have a variety of entrees to choose from, including mahimahi ($19.95), shrimp scampi ($15.95), and lobster tail ($22.95). The cost of the all-you-can-eat salad bar is $12.95.

On the weekends, a prime rib or seafood buffet will be offered, and pricing is still being worked out, Branch said.

“We have a simple menu. Nothing is over named or overpriced,” he said. “Our goal is to provide consistent service and food. Here, you will find a well-rounded, good old-fashioned steakhouse meal with all the trimmings and always at a great value.”
