Students from Innovations Public Charter School recently exchanged culture and curriculum with their sister school, Seiko Gakuen from Tokushima, Japan. The sister school partnership between the two schools was established in 2007. The annual visit of Seiko students consists of a week of immersion into the Innovations school day, attending classes, sharing curriculum and experiencing local community through joint field trips and activities around town.
This year, Innovations students were able to share the traditions of Halloween with their sister school with a field trip to Kahua Ranch Pumpkin Patch. It was the first experience with pumpkins for the Japanese students, with each student selecting his own pumpkin and then participating in pumpkin carving back on campus the next day with their Innovations partners. In addition, Innovations’ students hosted sister school students to trick-or-treating in local neighborhoods on Halloween night to give them the full experience of Halloween, local-style.
Topping off their annual visit, Seiko students participated in a HomeStay program with Innovations families — living with a family for two nights, where they could fully experience the local culture and live the life of a child in Hawaii.
