HONOLULU — Makenzie Robertson scored a career-high 23 points, and No. 1 Baylor routed Hawaii 77-42 on Sunday to close a disappointing tournament for the Lady Bears in Honolulu despite two dominant wins.
Brittney Griner had 10 points in 16 minutes, playing just 3 minutes in the second half. Baylor (4-1) pulled away from Hawaii during a 23-4 run midway through the first half to go up 32-9 with 7:42 left.
The Lady Bears started the second half with a 20-3 run to take a 37-point lead with less than 14 minutes left.
Kamilah Martin scored 15 points for Hawaii (1-3) in defeat.
Baylor’s two wins at the Rainbow Wahine tournament came after losing Friday to No. 4 Stanford.
No. 4 Stanford defeats Hawaii on Saturday
HONOLULU — Chiney Ogwumike had 15 points and 17 rebounds, and No. 4 Stanford easily beat Hawaii 69-42 on Saturday night.
The Cardinal (4-0) dominated one night after upsetting No. 1 Baylor at the start of the Rainbow Wahine tournament in Honolulu, never trailing the host team.
Ogwumike — who at one point in the first half had 13 rebounds to Hawaii’s 13 as a team — was one of four players with double-digit points for Stanford.
Joslyn Tinkle scored 16 points, Amber Orrange had 13, and Toni Kokenis had 12.
Stanford scored 14 unanswered points midway through the first half and led by 18 at the break. The Cardinal led by as much as 29 in the second half and were never seriously threatened.
Freshman Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 14 points for Hawaii (1-2), which shot just under 31 percent.
Hawaii tried to shoot 3-pointers early to hang with the Cardinal but gave up in the second half with little success.
Kamilah Martin had nine points and six rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine.
Notre Dame 1 win away from BCS title game
NEW YORK — Notre Dame is a victory away from playing for the BCS title. Alabama and Georgia each need two, and could have to go through each other in the SEC title game.
A day after Oregon and Kansas State lost to give up control of the BCS race, the Fighting Irish (.9973) moved into first place in the standings for the first time.
Notre Dame (11-0), ranked No. 1 in both polls and by the computer ratings, needs only to beat slumping rival Southern California on Saturday in Los Angeles to earn its first trip to the BCS title game.
Alabama (.9333) and Georgia (.8763) also have rivalry games Saturday. The Crimson Tide hosts Auburn, and the Bulldogs play Georgia Tech at home.
Florida (10-1) is in fourth heading into a huge game at 10th-place Florida State. The Seminoles (10-1) also will have an ACC title game to play.
Oregon (10-1) dropped to fifth, and Kansas State (10-1) was sixth.
USC’s Barkley out for Notre Dame game
LOS ANGELES —Quarterback Matt Barkley will miss Southern California’s regular-season finale against No. 1 Notre Dame on Saturday with a sprained right shoulder.
Coach Lane Kiffin announced Sunday that freshman Max Wittek will make his first career start in place of Barkley.
Barkley was injured in the final minutes of the Trojans’ 38-28 loss to UCLA when he was sacked by linebacker Anthony Barr. Barkley stayed down on the field for a long moment, and Wittek replaced him on USC’s final series.
Czech Republic wins Davis Cup over Spain
PRAGUE — It’s a job for two when the Czechs win Davis Cup finals.
Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek gave the Czech Republic the title for the first time as an independent nation by beating Spain 3-2 in the final on Sunday. Each spent about 10 grueling hours on court, playing the opening singles, teaming up for the doubles and then completing the reverse singles.
Ivan Lendl and Tomas Smid did the same when Czechoslovakia defeated Italy 4-1 in the 1980 final.
“They’ve been our inspiration, our idols. They’re the legends and now we’re joining them,” Stepanek said after clinching the title with a 6-4, 7-6 (0), 3-6, 6-3 upset victory over Nicolas Almagro in the last reverse singles.
