Book club meets Tuesday
The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library to discuss “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain. The book captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Hadley.
The club meets for discourse and light refreshments. It will also finalize next year’s reading list. New members are welcome.
The club will meet in December with members of the Thurston family to discuss “The Life and Times of Lucy Thurston.”
Hospice offers holiday grief workshop
Dana Moody, director of bereavement services for Hospice of Kona, will conduct a free grief and the holidays workshop from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at hospice’s community service center, 74-4925 Walua Road. Moody will share advice to help those dealing with grief and the loss of a loved one during the holidays. Refreshments will be served.

Keck astronomy lecture is Tuesday
Guenther Hasinger, director of the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, will present “Black Holes and the Fate of the Universe” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea.
The character and distribution of stellar and supermassive black holes is a rapidly changing area of astronomy research. Recently, telescopes such as Keck Observatory have confirmed that supermassive black holes are found in the centers of most nearby galaxies, including the Milky Way. A tight relationship exists between black hole mass and the properties of their host galaxies. New instrument capabilities, such as those planned at Keck, will reveal even more about the nature of black holes and how they play a role in the ongoing evolution of the universe and everything in it.
Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Queen Emma Luau slated for Nov. 30
The Queen Emma Luau, a fundraiser for Aha Punana Leo and Christ Church Episcopal, is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Queen Emma Community Center at Christ Church Episcopal, 81-1004 Konawaena School Road, Kealakekua.
The event features live entertainment and “a full Hawaiian menu,” including lomi lomi salmon, kalua pig and chicken long rice. Tickets are $20 per person; keiki 12 and younger are free. Group reservations are available.

County offers photography classes
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Kona is taking registration through Nov. 30 for beginner, intermediate and advanced photography classes led by Robert Weygand Sr. Morning and evening classes are planned, as well as a darkroom class for film photographers. Classes begin Dec. 3.
Film or digital SLR cameras are required to take the class. Class size is limited and early registration is recommended. For more information or to register for the class, call Marshall Tohara at 327-3565.
Interfaith Thanksgiving program is Wednesday
The annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Program is slated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako St. Members of various houses of faith will provide the entertainment, including choirs and soloists from the hosting church, Vaisnava Hindu Association, New Thought Center of Hawaii, Ecumenical Church of Light, Lovin’ Life Ministries, Iglesia La Luz Del Mundo and Kona United Methodist Church, Tongan Ministries.
The program is free, but nonperishable foods and money will be accepted for donation to the Food Basket. Pastor Larry Hand of the host church will be master of ceremonies. Parking lot attendants will guide guests from the parking area into the church. Light refreshments follow the program.

Meet and Eat dinner slated Wednesday
The Kona Task Force on Feeding the Hungry will hold the 20th annual Meet and Eat Thanksgiving Dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kealakehe Intermediate School cafeteria.
Meet and Eat is a community-based program made up of organizations, churches and businesses joining together to feed the needy in West Hawaii. The organization expects to serve about 500 meals this year and has served more than 135,000 meals in its 19-year history.
