Police arrested 36 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Nov. 5 and Sunday; six were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police arrested 36 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Nov. 5 and Sunday; six were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police have made 1,272 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,273 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 14 motorists, South Hilo officers 10 and Puna officers eight, according to police. Three motorists were arrested in the South Kohala District while officers arrested one motorist in each North Hilo and Ka’u.

There have been 1,260 major accidents this year compared with 1,199 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 36 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 18 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say nine of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 10 to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
